The Austrians - Part 4

Perhaps this is the Mother Lode: 136 Austrian Infantry in Shako, in a ubiquitous red facing.  There were about a dozen "German" Regiments that had red facings of one shade or another.

I started photographing what I thought was one unit of 40 figures.

Basic paint job, decent basing.

Only a drummer for a command... Wait a minute, what about all the other figures in shakos?  Maybe there were spare officers and such.

So I got then all out and sorted.  This unit is 40 figures and has a consistent coloured flock, other than that it is identically painted figures to the rest, bar one.

Same facing, but a subtle difference in the shade of the flock (more greener - must be on the other side of the fence).

A 48 man unit.  Broken standard bearer and a few bayonets missing.

Another 48 man unit, complete with standard.

So here we have em all.  136 figures in two by 48 and one by 40 man units.

All painted the same except for one bloke.

The four standard Minifig poses.

Decent flag.

A mix of single, triples and quads for the basing.

Bird's Eye view

A lot of metal here.

All based on cardboard to the same 15mm by 20mm size.  Some slight warping with a few bases, but they have stood the test of time well.

The Austrians - Part 3

Next up we have some Jagers.  A quick bit of research tells me the Austrians had twelve battalions of jagers, but with no uniform variations.

Thirty six figures make up this unit.  A couple of bayonets are missing.

Another well painted and based unit.

Stock standard Minifg poses.

Almost exclusively based in pairs.

Again to the same 15mm by 20mm base for a single figure.  These ones on plasticard.

The Austrians - Part 2

For this post we have a grenadier unit, which I'm guessing is from Regt. No.2 Erz. Ferdinand, based on the Hungarian blue trouser and yellow facing and yellow buttons.

Thirty six figures strong.  All Minifigs.  A flagpole, but no standard and about half a dozen bayonets are missing.

Well painted and based.

The four standard Minifig poses.

Triples, doubles and singles.

All based on plasticard, 15mm by 20mm per figure.

The Return of the Austrians

I will let others add the history, but last Wednesday the NWS committee took an in principle decision to take up the option to buyback the Austrians.

Over the coming days (maybe weeks) I will photograph each unit and post the details in this blog.  Anyone with information about the unit (who painted it, games it distinguished itself in etc) please add to the comments or tell me and I will add the information separately (maintaining anonymity if necessary).

For the first unit, please welcome Regt. No. 30 Prinz de Ligne from Walloon with their pike grey facings and yellow buttons (that's the best I could do - uniform reference source is http://www.napoleonguide.com/infantry_austface.htm

Forty eight strong, all Minifigs.  The standard is broken and a few bayonets are bent, but mostly intact.

There is some wear due to handling - the patina of age.  But they make an impressive massed unit all the same.

Classic Minifig poses (note damaged standard-bearer third from the right of the photo.)

My theory is that this is standard type of basing for the old WRG Horse and Musket rules.

This unit is on metal bases, 15mm by 20mm per figure.
